Berries and the 80′s
Living is easy with eyes closed/Misunderstanding all you see/It’s getting hard to be someone/But it all works out/It doesn’t matter much to me.~Strawberry Fields Forever by the Beatles
There’s nothing like going outside in the morning and picking strawberries fresh off the vine for your cereal. That’s what I’ve been able to do all week! Two years ago we planted one little strawberry plant and it’s growing like crazy. Everything you see below started from one tiny plant. All the white buds are what we saw last week.
Now there are red berries everywhere!
Apparently we’re not the only things that like to eat strawberries. So do slugs!! How gross. Do you see it there on the strawberry? Ick. When I was little I stepped on a slug when I was barefoot. Totally grosses me out. I can still feel it squishing between my toes when I think about it.
Even though I’ve been picking every day, we picked a large bowl full the other day. Aren’t they pretty? There are still tons more growing. I’m not quite sure what to do with all of them. They are definitely really sweet and completely organic! What would you do with an abundance of berries?
On the topic of berries, I just tried this new Kashi Berry Blossoms cereal.
It’s not bad, but not my favorite Kashi cereal. It tastes like really lightened up version of Cap’n Crunch Berries Cereal. Would I buy again? Probably not unless they are really cheap on sale.
So of course all this talk of berries makes me think of one of my childhood favorites–Strawberry Shortcake! I had so many SS dolls and toys that all smelled like strawberries.
Have you seen the modern SS though? Look her up. I get trying to make her more current with the way she looks and dresses, but she’s not nearly has great as the original.
Since I’m taking about childhood favorites, I have to tell you how excited I am that The Bangles are coming here for a concert in June! I’ve always wanted to start an 80′s female cover band and you better believe I would cover all of their songs. They were always one of my favorite bands growing up. I’m totally going to see them!
Whose songs would I cover in my band? All the greats–Debbie (now “Deborah”) Gibson, Tiffany, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Madonna, the Go Gos, Bananarama…oh the list goes on. I would make sure my drummer had a wicked cool 80′s mullet going on.
And of course there would be big bangs, shoulder pads and legwarmers involved.
I’m rambling, but I loved the 80′s. Some of my favorite things from back then:
- The music (duh!)
- MTV actually played videos
- Krimped hair
- Jellies (remember those shoes? I had like every color)
- Grape Ape, The Smurfs, My Little Pony, He-Man and She-Ra, the Care Bears, Rainbow Brite, JEM!!! Cartoons back then were so much better than what’s on now!)
- Alf
- The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, The Lost Boys, Teen Witch, Weird Science, Mannequin…the list of movies goes on
- You Can’t Do That on Television
- My Cabbage Patch Kids big wheel
- My hot pink leggings with black polka dots
Okay I need to stop or I could go on forever. Now I need to use my brainpower to think of a name for my 80′s cover band.:)
What were your favorite things about the 80′s?
What should I name my “dream” band?
Any suggestions for what to do with all these strawberries?
